The Department of Humanities at the Penn State College of Medicine is pleased to announce a search for a full time, tenure-track position at the Full Professor, Associate Professor, or Assistant Professor level. We seek a creative, energetic scholar and teacher from a traditional humanities discipline, art/theatre/design, or social/behavioral science who is committed to promoting reflective, humanistic care in the medical profession. Experience working in clinical settings is preferred, but not required. We also particularly welcome applicants who integrate creative elements into their work. Candidates for this position must have a terminal degree (PhD, MFA, EdD, or other) by the start date. Applicants for this position should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, leadership abilities, and commitment to a collaborative approach to research, teaching, and community service. Applicants for this position must also have a strong track record of interest and ability to secure external funding. The Department of Humanities at the Penn State College of Medicine has a long history of pioneering work in the field of medical humanities, and is broadly embraced throughout the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Humanities courses are integrated into the medical school curricula in all four years. Faculty members throughout the institution are actively engaged in Department activities, including an annual literary and visual arts publication, musical and theatrical performances, community service projects, as well as research and teaching. More generally, the Department’s many contributions have helped create an institutional environment where Humanities faculty can serve as change agents by pursuing their professional passions and developing collaborative projects that matter. The tertiary-care Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus is located in picturesque central Pennsylvania, which combines quiet suburban-rural landscapes with a broad range of cultural amenities: the Hershey Theatre (which routinely hosts Broadway plays and musicals); local and regional symphonies; minor league baseball, hockey, and soccer; ready access to the Appalachian trail, Gettysburg, and other outdoor activities. The region also benefits from ready access to Hershey Park, the Giant Center, and nearby urban centers such as Baltimore (90 miles), Philadelphia (90 miles), Washington D.C (130 miles), and the Pennsylvania State Capital, Harrisburg (15 miles). Penn State values diversity in all forms, and seeks individuals who will promote diversity throughout our organization. Our core institutional values are Respect, Integrity, Teamwork, and Excellence. Salary and benefits are competitive and benchmarked against those of other colleges of medicine in our region.
