New Position at Old Salem Museums & Gardens; Winston-Salem, NC
Introduction: Old Salem Museums & Gardens in Winston-Salem, NC, was recently awarded an implementation grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a new permanent exhibition, “The Moravian Way of Health and Healing.” As part of the grant, Old Salem will hire a Program Coordinator for Humanities, Medicine, and Science who will be responsible for developing programming associated with the exhibition in order to expand its reach. This is a two year position to begin in the fall of 2016, depending on the availability of the candidate. The annual salary is $30,000 plus benefits.

The Exhibition: This new exhibition explores the history of medicine and science among the Moravians in NC from the time of the arrival of their first doctor in 1753 through a succession of physicians/surgeons/apothecaries to the mid-19th century. The Moravians developed a unique system to care for the body, spirit, and soul, and this is this story that will be told in the exhibition.
Candidate Profile and Requirements: The ideal candidate must be a recent M.A. or Ph.D. graduate (within five years) in public humanities, medical history, medical humanities or a similar related program. A strong background in American medical history and a working knowledge of the history of religions in America and the history of the American South from the mid-18th to mid-19th centuries will be important. The candidate should enjoy scholarship, research, interaction with the public and have creative ideas for programs. Good organization and communication skills are also necessary, and knowledge of social media, and web development and applications will be considered key assets.
