Not “Simply the Old-Fashioned Grip”: The Impact of the 1918 Influenza Pandemic

One hundred years ago, influenza killed at least 50 million people worldwide. Unlike most influenza viruses, this “swine flu” strain killed young, healthy adults in addition to the usual high-risk populations. This lecture will focus on how the disease spread, why it was so deadly, and its impact on public health services and the pharmaceutical industry. Using collections from UNC’s Wilson Library and Health Sciences Library, the lecture will heavily focus on the disease’s impact on North Carolinians.
Dawne Lucas has been the Special Collections Librarian at UNC’s Health Sciences Library since 2013, and previously worked at the Duke University Medical Center Archives. She earned an MA in Public History from North Carolina State University and an MSLS from the UNC-Chapel Hill. Lucas is developing several exhibits to coincide with the “Going Viral” interdisciplinary symposium (4-6 April 2018) hosted by UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, UNC’s Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, and RTI International.
