Health Humanities Exchange (HHEX)

November 11, 2016

November 11-12, 2016. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill supports a wide range of cross-disciplinary approaches to the study of health, disability, and healthcare. In light of these diverse research and education initiatives, the Health and Humanities Exchange (HHEX) conference will offer a forum for knowledge sharing, workshops, and generative conversations.

The Health and Humanities Exchange (HHEX) is an event that will spotlight health-related research and education initiatives at UNC-CH that draw upon the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. This event will introduce UNC faculty and students to research going on across the university, provide a space for generative conversation, and foster collaboration in future initiatives.

HHEX will be held on November 11-12, 2016 in Hyde Hall. The keynotes will be given by Dr. Michele Rivkin-Fish and Dr. Sue Estroff. Panel presentations will be organized around four main themes: 1) Epistemologies, 2) Communities, 3) Embodiment, and 4) Institutions. HHEX will also include:

  • An interactive lecture/workshop on how training in theater and the arts can contribute to medical education and clinical practice
  • A roundtable on pedagogy
  • An interdisciplinary student research workshop
  • A panel presentation on initiatives at Duke, Wake Forest, Lenoir Rhyne, and NCSU
  • Coffee breaks, lunches, and dinners

This event is supported by Mellon and UNC Fire Grant funding as well as campus co-sponsors: the Center for Bioethics, the Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, the Department of Social Medicine, Institute for Arts and Humanities, the Center for Genomics and Society, the School of Nursing, and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies.
