Amidst the growing popularity of Ozempic, the rolling back of body diversity initiatives in the fashion industry, and increasing economic precarity, the United States is experiencing a resurgence of anti-fatness.A growing number of Americans are turning to body liberation movements to foster more compassionate relationships with their bodies. This talk explores the spatial processes of anti-fatness and body liberation. Drawing from five years of archival and place-based research, we will examine the history of Durham, NC as the “Diet Capital of the World” and the emergent weight-inclusive wellness industry in the Research Triangle.
