The Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities & History of Medicine Boyarsky Series on Race & Health presents “Race and Reproduction: Eugenic Sterilization Revisited” by Johanna Schoen (Rutgers University)
This talk will analyze the history of North Carolina’s eugenic sterilization program which operated from 1929-1975 and authorized the sterilization of more than 7,000 people.
Johanna Schoen, PhD is professor of history at Rutgers University-New Brunswick with an affiliation at the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research. She is the author of two books, including Choice and Coercion: Birth Control, Sterilization, and Abortion in Public Health and Welfare in the Twentieth Century. Her current work explores ethical frameworks in defense of the right to decide over life and death in abortion care, neonatology, and at the end of life in cases of terminal illness.
The Boyarsky Lectureship, created through a gift from Drs. Saul and Rose Boyarsky, brings distinguished lecturers to Duke University who can inspire achievement in social justice and public health through science.
